UFC and ONE Close to Trading Demetrious Johnson and Ben Askren
The first “trade” in MMA history between UFC and ONE Championship is close to being finalized, according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. The terms discussed would send former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson to ONE and former ONE welterweight champion Ben “Funky” Askren to the UFC.
If the deal goes through as planned, the UFC and ONE would be releasing both Johnson and Askren from their current contracts, allowing each fighter to sign with the other company.
Johnson (27-3-1) is coming off of a split decision loss in a rematch against Henry Cejudo at UFC 227 in August. “Mighty Mouse” is the first-ever UFC flyweight champion and holds notable Octagon victories over the likes of Ian McCall, Joseph Benavidez (x2), John Dodson (x2), Kyoji Horiguchi, and current champion Henry Cejudo.
Askren (18-0-1NC) is a former Bellator and ONE welterweight champion that retired from the sport of MMA after his first-round TKO victory over Shinya Aoki last November. He holds an undefeated record and will be making his UFC debut if this deal comes to fruition.
