Former WEC and UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz revealed on ESPN’s Helwani Show that he will require shoulder surgery at the beginning of 2019.

Cruz suffered multiple injuries while sparring in preparation for a scheduled bout against John Lineker at UFC 233 next month. According to Cruz, he threw a punch with his right hand and immediately felt his shoulder “click” as his fingers went numb. “The Dominator” went straight to the hospital for an MRI and later discovered that he had two major tears inside of his shoulder.

When asked what the timetable looks like for a return after surgery, Cruz responded: "It's basically an ACL of the shoulder”. With the assumption being that the recovery time will be roughly one year.

The former two-time UFC champion plans to use this most recent setback as fuel to continue his already legendary MMA career. “I’m not the greatest bantamweight of all time despite my injuries, I’m the greatest bantamweight of all time because of my injuries,” Cruz said.
