Kelvin Gastelum vs. Israel Adesanya for Interim Middleweight Title at UFC 236
Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya will compete at UFC 236 to determine a new interim UFC middleweight champion on April 13.
Gastelum (15-3-1NC) was set to take on Robert Whittaker for the “undisputed” middleweight title at UFC 234 earlier this month, but Whittaker was forced to withdraw due to injury. Gastelum is coming off of back-to-back wins over Michael Bisping and “Jacare” Souza, most recently defeating Souza via split decision at UFC 224 in May of last year. He holds notable Octagon victories over the likes of Souza, Bisping, Nate Marquardt, Johny Hendricks, and Tim Kennedy since joining the UFC in 2013.
Adesanya (16-0) is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Anderson Silva at UFC 234 earlier this month. “The Last Stylebender” holds an undefeated professional MMA record that includes notable victories over Silva, Brad Tavares, and Derek Brunson. The fight against Gastelum will mark the sixth time Adesanya will compete inside of the Octagon since joining the UFC in February of last year.
